Frequently Asked Questions - English and Work Experience Programme InformationIs the English & Work Experience Programme open to non-EU students? The Programme is open to everyone between the ages of 18 and 35 who satisfy the requisite criteria. Students can be from ANY country. Can I get a visa for participating in this Programme? If you enrol on the Work Experience Programme, you will be sent a Certificate of Enrolment covering the whole length of the Programme, that is to say the period of the entire "Sandwich" Programme (including the classroom based study and work experience). This document will allow you to apply for a student visa for the entire duration of the Programme. Can I get a refund if my Visa is refused? The fees will be refunded minus an administration fee. Please read our Terms and Conditions for full details.
Can I change my Placement if it does not suit me? If you are unhappy with your Placement you must contact your Coordinator. Under no circumstances may you leave your Placement without LMC's written permission. If you get this permission, you will have to return to LMC and study General English until a new Placement is arranged. Please note that it may take time to find another suitable Placement and that you will have to pay for the additional time you study. Students being allocated a Placement after arrival in London will be offered a maximum of two placements. What happens if I am dismissed from my Placement? If you are dismissed by your employer because of failure to comply with the company's expectations and/or code of conduct, LMC may terminate your participation in the Programme. Who should I contact in case of a problem during my Placement? You should first talk to your Line Manager and, if the problem is not solved, contact the Work Experience Coordinator.
Do I need a work permit? Non-EU Nationals who wish to participate in this Programme do not require a work permit or special permission to work, but they do have to have a valid student visa to take part in a Work Experience Programme. How can I work more than 20 hours a week with a student visa? The UK Home Office allows students who are holding a student visa for the duration of their course and work experience to work and be paid for more than the usual 20 hours as long as the Work Placement is part of the Sandwich Course and the education institution agrees. What is included in the first part of the Course? During the first part of the Course you will attend English classes for your level and have an induction with the Work Experience Coordinator. What will I study during the last week of the Programme? This is a week of consolidation. You will have a debriefing of the Course and put together the objectives vis-à-vis the achievements. Can I get a paid Placement in an industry other than Hospitality? Only the Placements in the Hospitality Industry are guaranteed to be paid. However if you have a Placement in another industry, your employer may help financially with the cost of commuting and lunch. Furthermore, if you are very good at performing your duties, your employer may decide to pay you. All this is a matter between you and your employer. LMC does not get involved in this matter, nor guarantee payment.
Do I have to take an exam at the end of the Programme? There is no mandatory exam. However we recommend to all of our students to take an external exam at the beginning and/or at the end of the Programme. This may be a very useful tool in ascertaining the success of the Programme in improving your English skills (which is the primary objective of this Programme) When can I start the Programme? You can start any first or third Monday of a month, and every Monday during the peak summer period. Will accommodation and meals be provided, or will this have to be paid from the salary? Accommodation and meals will be offered on some of the hospitality Placements but not on all and definitely not on Work Placements outside the hotel and hospitality industry. On non-paid Work Placements, you will be expected to pay your own cost of food and board. Please note that when applying for a visa to enter the UK as a student, you are very likely to be required to prove that you are able to meet these costs. Is there a minimum level of English required? You need to have at least an upper-intermediate level and for some Placements an advanced level of English.
